Important Infield Factoid

This little fact is important to all those who play in the infield, particularly to those of us who play Pitcher, Catcher and First.

When we are in the field and the other team is at bat, if one of their players takes long lead-offs and lingers getting back to the base after the pitch, the ball can be thrown to the person at that base (eg, First Base) and that person can tag them out if they're not standing on it. SO, if you have the ball, it's in-between pitches, and the opponent is lingering, throw the ball to the person at the base (who's paying attention!) and we can get ourselves a quick and easy out.

WP4B

Ahhh, VICTORY!!!! Yesterday, we beat Will Play 4 Beer with a score of 15-7. We started off strong with 5 runs in the first inning, thanks to their pitcher throwing a lot of balls. I think we even batted through the lineup the first inning. Their team was lacking a second baseman, but they had some decent hitters and were able to keep it fairly competitive. Our own Lou Santini showed off by hitting TWO home runs in the game. He gets his own sport coat w/ embroidered patch and VIP parking next week.

All in all, a pretty strong showing by THE TEAM!!!

The Geezers.

Turns out, The Geezers were not a bunch of old men and they had a couple of young guys on their team. One of which might have been a ringer. He hit a bomb to left in the first inning, but Dan was there to make a sweet catch. We actually held them in the first inning and scored too, so we were ahead. Until the second inning. Turns out they can hit. A lot. Unfortunately, we were not able to give The Geezers a heart attack and we lost something like 10-5. It was a good effort though, and there were many excellent plays. CJ handled a tough throw to second to end an inning. Mimma had a pretty good stop in right field. We also managed to hold onto the ball and didn't make a bunch of dumb throws. So, that's a good thing to build on. Baby steps.

Against the A-Team

This week's game brought a disappointing loss to all the players of THE TEAM that were present. The A-team was a good opponent matching our skill level in ways that other teams have not succeeded.

We started off on fire, good defense, good offense, runs coming in and holding 'em. And then we started to win and we started to slack off. Maybe we got lazy, maybe we were bored, or maybe we just got a little careless in our excitement.

Mid-game we had a couple of errors where the other team got a couple of runs (much undeserved). In the last inning it was down to the wire, the score was 8-9 and we had a man on third for the tie. Unfortunately, the third out came first and we lost.

But hey, as a wise man once said, at least we know what to do next week, right?

Game 2 - 1 and 2

I feel like someone should write something about this game...but honestly I don't remember much of it. That was TWO days ago. So much can happen in just two days. I guess I'll just outline it.

We played a team who's infield fielding was good (but not remarkable), outfield fielding was not so good (they just weren't catchers), and batting was spectacular (they could hit anywhere).

And so we played.

And we got some runs.

But not enough.

We lost.

1 and 1

This week's game was a dream come true for The Team. We won! That's right, we played for all of you that weren't there, we played our hearts out and we won! We ALMOST could have won by 10 points or more, but unfortunately there was a bit of a mixup mid-game that, with any other team (such as the Salem Heat) would have been ridiculously poor sportsmanship. However, with this team and our team combined, it ended up being a bit of confusion.

The scene:

There is a player on first and another on second. A pop fly is hit to the pitcher and it is caught (but to the ump it looks like it is just picked up because it is caught so close to the dirt). The runners are completely confused. The person on second doesn't touch back but runs to third. The person on first never runs. The ball is all over the place -- thrown to first (runner out), thrown to third (safe) thrown to second where nobody is (an out?).

Teacher Time AKA Forgetaboutit sees 3 outs and all the runners leave their bases but a new guy goes up to the plate to bat. There is confusion and a conference ensues between the coaches and the ump. The Ump says there are two outs--the Forgetaboutits conference and say it is possible three.

Finally the ump explains himself:
1. The ball was not caught
2. The batter is out at first
3. The people at 1st and 2nd should go back to where they were
4. There is 1 out

So in reality...there are at least 2 outs:
1. The ball is not caught but the batter was out at first by throw
2. The guy on first never ran to second and so when the base at second was touched the other guy should be out.
3. Even if the guy on first isn't out at second, he's out at 1st because he was still standing there during the batter force-out.

The Team continues to play and the Forgetaboutits make 6 runs against their foes who are immensely confused by the previous play. Luckily, like every other team we play against usually, we were up by a lot already. So, suddenly the score was 11-7 and we just had to hold 'em.

And we did! They got 1-2-3 outs on our batters and went up thinking they were tied but then disappointed when they learned they were losing by 4. We held them with some fabulous plays by everyone on The Team.

So next week, let's remember our victory and play like we mean it the whole way through. Go The Team!

Yes!

Do you guys think we could play at this field next week?

Awesome.

These guys really know softball!

Game 1 - Oh The Humanity

While I am no position to speak for THE TEAM, there were some stretches in game one that were quite the opposite of fun. Twenty six to four is not why we set out alarms to get out of bed and go to our games. (Yeah, I know the game was at 4:45. Some of us aren't morning roosters.)

On the other hand, Jenny made a sweet play on a hot line drive and the new guys (Peter, Rob and Dan) are making nice contributions to THE TEAM. Dave hit a home run although it was more like Dave hit a triple and stole home.

GO THE TEAM!!!

Strategy

After Sunday's game - the Pre-season game 2, I think we need to work on our strategy. There are some things that we did great in Game 1 that we forgot how to do in Game 2 under the pressure of massively losing. Sure, we know now why we are not placed in League C...we know that we are more comfortable playing the Amistar Allstars down in League E. It's more fun to play at our own level, don't you think? Great things can happen...like at Game 1. There's a better flow.

So what's this about new strategies? Even though we don't expect to play any more games against these high-level teams, it doesn't hurt to be prepared. I only have two suggestions to assist in a less painful defeat.

Strategy: Against all natural inclinations you may have, hold the ball.

Example: You are playing in the infield and get the ball and throw to one of the bases for an out. There's an overthrow or an error which that next infielder fields and tries to make things right by throwing it on to another base where the runner is now going. STOP. This is your chance to employ the new strategy. Hold the ball, throw to the pitcher, avoid further error.

Strategy: Throw to the easy base or the cut-off.

Example: You are playing in the outfield. The other team hits a roller deep. You rush to get it and throw as far as you can to nobody in particular. STOP. Throw it to the cut-off, whomever it is. Cut-off, this is your chance to make a good decision. Throw to the next closest and try to get the ball to the pitcher...don't throw to home, it's a lose-lose situation. Avoid the overthrow! In the softball clinic they gave us a tip that was spectacular. It was "If you can't throw the distance needed, try to make it with only one solid bounce in front of the intended." A good tip for all!

Pre-Season Game 1 Recap

Pre-season for THE TEAM!!! started off with a 10-6 victory against The Mighty Montage. Even though they were short a few players, they put up a good fight while we were shaking off our rust. We turned it around in the end and came up with a few runs in the last inning to seal the victory. We had some solid debuts from new players Dan and Peter, and it was great to see all the returning players. Pre-season continues with a 6pm game this coming Sunday.

Idea For Next Season

I was thinking we should do something intimidating next season. Something to strike fear into the hearts of our opponents. My idea is this - we all get ready in the dugout and then charge screaming onto the field together! Think of all of the great movie battlefield scenes - Lord of the Rings, 300, Troy, Gladiator, etc. The sight and sound of thousands of warriors rushing at anyone would make the strongest of armies poop their pants.

Granted, we are only 10 players on a softball diamond, but we could still make some noise. I say we run out there and shout things like, "Play for glory!" or "This is for Asgard!"

Who's with me?

Game 10

I don't know if I can pinpoint one single moment Where It All Went to Hell. I think I tried to block most of the first game versus Salem Heat AKA The Whiny Douche Bag Bitches out of my mind at this point. The one cool thing I do remember is Kareena's awesome catch in right field! Okay, okay, I'm incredibly biased but I'm really proud of her.

Salem Heat protested a infield fly / foul ball called when they were up by 4 runs in the second to last inning, which I thought was lame. Turns out the umpire made the correct call. When protesting a call, as far as I've understood it, the ump is only supposed to be spoken to by managers, not yelled at by 2 members of the team like these guys were doing.

The other lame thing they did was when that dude at second wanted a time out with bases loaded to go tell the batter something with two minutes left in the game. What kind of strategy can you give when bases are loaded? "Hit the ball good"? Gimme a break. That team really peeved me off, so I hope we get to play them again next season. I'm bringing my brass knucks the next time.

The opponents of the team after us, Baxter-Bierney, failed to show so we played a fun scrimmage game with them which was good. We lost that one, too, but at least it was fun and light-hearted like the majority of our games this season.

The moment it all went to hell! Game 9

You can check the post for Game 4 when we first played Variety Pak. It says that they were a nice group of people and we were going to feel bad when we beat them in the rematch. The "we are going to beat them" part was correct but "feel bad" part was wrong wrong wrong. It felt great to beat them! It felt great to see Chris pitching so well with only a couple of walks and several strikouts. It felt great to see Tyler get an unassisted double play. It felt great to see Mimma get two RBI. It felt great to see Big Zima hit a stand-up triple. It felt great to see Lillian slam the door by making a solid play on a foul ball to end the game. Welcome to hell Variety Pak. But you're still nice people.

The Infield Fly Rule

"An infield fly is a fair fly ball, NOT including a line drive or attempted bunt which can be caught by an infielder, pitcher or catcher with ordinary effort when first and second OR first, second and third base are occupied with less than 2 out. There is judgment by the umpire what ordinary effort is."

But if your glove looks shaky because the ball is so high that it probably went by the Milky Way on it's way down and it looks like you are not giving enough of an effort, even if the ball touches your glove on the way down....the infield fly rule will not be called.

But don't worry, when you botch a catch and the shortstop is there to back you up, you end up with an unassisted double out at second.

Unassisted double play you say? How can that be? This is how it can be. *Shortstop Lou fielded the ball that rolled off the tip of my glove, and threw it to Tyler who gave chase to the guy running from second to third. Scared, the guy ran back to second. But NO! Not possible! There is someone coming from first to second! What now?! Tag 'em. Both. The girl coming from first to second doesn't know what to do when someone is already there--she can't go back, the batter is at first, but she can't go forward because someone is still there...life must go on, 2 outs at second.

And just like that, we held them all game. Up by three in the first inning--and not one more run to show for it. There were some good catches, some good stops, and a lot of teamwork. The The Team really stepped it up. AND we got runs. Walks and Runs, hits and catches, plays like a real team.

The Team 7 - Variety Pak 3 (this might not be the actual final score)

*It has come to my attention that the botched catch + the 2 outs at second may not have happened at the same time, but, whatever, it SOUNDS good, right?

Getting to know THE TEAM - One last guy 18

Sandy said that I should have been the first to answer these questions. She was probably right. I never heard back from Roberto. So we will all have to imagine what his answers may have been.

So...

Ladies and Gentleman RICK

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: I used to work with Chris when he was a teenager with a grill festooned with orthodonture. I am ten years older than him so he used to ask for my advice. Now he is an educated gentleman with a job and is engaged to a lovely woman. I ask him for advice now.

Q: What positions have you played this season? Do you have a favorite?

I have played LF, CF, SS, 1B and 3B. My favorite is softball. I just want to play!!!

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 18 for your jersey number?

A: The 1 is for January, the month my son was born. The 8 is for August, the month my daughter was born. 18!

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I played football at Reseda High School and Pierce College.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I spent most of the '90s playing in bands. I can still lay some bass tracks if there is a need. I can also improvise dialogue with the sound turned down on the TV.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: YOU CAN HAVE $5,000!!! By the way, you guys are a bunch of banditos when it came time to answer this question.

The moment it all went to hell! Game 8

This game went to hell fast and often. It was a lot like game 5 without the deadly odor in the dugout. It seems like we went out there as a team and each took turns making errors. I'm not keeping score but I think Liz did not have any errors. We made some plays we blew some plays and got stomped out. Maeve's Minions had a pretty good pitcher. He had an odd spin on the ball and that kept our runs on the tiny side. I think I hate those guys.

GO THE TEAM!!!

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 99 Chris

Ladies and Gentlemen The Crippler

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Jenny, Tyler and I talked about getting a softball team together back in 1988. Obviously, Jenny remembered about it at some point last year, and put it into action. I've known Jenny and Tyler since 1996, when we all started at Woodbury University together.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I have played starting pitcher, middle pitcher, relief pitcher and closing pitcher. I also posed for a picture, which some people pronounce like pitcher. There was 1 inning last season where I got to play 3rd. I don't mind playing pitcher, I just wish I was more consistent and was able to pitch a no-hitter.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 99 for your jersey number?

A: Kareena and I were both born on the 9th of our respective months. I knew Kareena would pick 9 for her jersey, so I went with 99. The first 9 is mine, the second 9 is hers. Isn't that cute.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I did one year of wrestling in 7th grade at Chaminade Middle School in Chatsworth, where I got my ass kicked repeatedly. I played sports all the time with my brother Andrew and neighbor friend Craig while growing up. I was on a softball team with my brother's company years ago, and played on a team with Jenny a few years ago.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I did stand-up comedy for a bit, which is how I met Lou. I still think of myself as a creative and funny person, but I'm focusing more on writing at the moment. I have way too much knowledge about '90s alternative rock music and pro wrestling. I also make kickass pancakes.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: As long as you are not spending it on cigarettes.

Getting to know THE TEAM - 64 Joey

Ladies and Gentlemen Joey

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: I am the manager's brother, so that was a big part of it. When she was gathering people to play she asked me and I said I'd play, and that was that.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I have played 1st, 3rd, shortstop, and I believe Left field and left/center (thought we may have only had 9 players in that game, so it might have been regular center). I don't have a favorite. I'm trying to get better at all of these positions (especially the outfield) so that we can put other players where they want to be played.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 64 for your jersey number?

A: There's no special reason why I chose 64. If you pressed me, I'd say that I chose 64, it's because it was a base 2 number that I had been dealing with when I needed to choose a number.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: In elementry school, I played tee-ball, pitch-tee, and regular pitch baseball (I stopped in 6th grade, when I felt significantly outclassed). In middle school, I played tennis where I was praised for my excellent backhand, which I guess was a textbook style backhand. In high school, I ran track and field for one semester (best finish: 4th place in the 800m. I only ran it once; my usual events were the 100m and 200m, which I never did better than 6th). I did some training for cross country, but decided not to do it since I had skipped most of the practices and thought my schedule that year would be more difficult.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I'm not sure if I'd call my other skills talent. I'm good at problem solving and video games, neither of which help me on the field. Otherwise, I guess you could say I'm a fast learner, which I think helps me with new sports. But I could be way off on that one.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Only if you're buying The Team ice cream cakes.

The moment it all went to hell - Game 7

Oh it went hell alright... but not for THE TEAM!!! The Amritsar All Stars picked up right were they left off from when we played them the first time. In that game they put together a nice rally in the last inning. They were just hitting easy line drives and bringing in runs one at a time. They did the same thing in the first inning. Nothing huge, just easy line drives and a fistful of runs by the time the inning was over. Then THE DAVE brought THE HELL with a grand slam. By the last inning it was 6-6 when Joey (The Big Zima) came through in the clutch and drove in the winning run. Maybe I am getting carried away, but that may have been one of the greatest games in the history of all sports. Well... maybe... I don't know.

GO THE TEAM!!!

The Moment It All Went to AWESOME - Game 7

Dave's grand slam!!!!!!

'Nuff said.

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 47 Tyler

Ladies and Gentlemen Tyler

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: I went to College with Chris and Jenny. We were at a Dodger game last year and we started talking about forming a softball game. I wanted to call it The Jenny Smith Frosh-Soph All-Stars of Burbank (JSFSASoB for short), but that got overturned at the 11th hour. I thought it would be funny to make the sports office have to use a really long and unwieldy name. I realized a little too late that I had a prior commitment on Sundays during the Winter, so that's why wasn't able to play much because 90% of our games started at 6pm.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: Outfield and Third. I feel most comfortable in the Outfield because I played that a lot in little league.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 47 for your jersey number?

A: Um, actually, I have no idea. I looked at the numbers I sent Rick and I don't fully understand my logic in picking my second and third choices. I wanted #13 and didn't get it, so I should have gone with #17 because I was always either #13 or #17 when I played soccer. I guess I wasn't really thinking. But #47 is cool, I guess.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I played little league for a while and I played soccer up through Hike School. I ran Cross-Country (we CRUSHED Crepsi every year in preseason) and Track in High School.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: My thumbs are double-jointed and, according to Yahoo!, I am a Fantasy Sports All-Star.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Um, I think you still owe me fifty from that time we did that thing, so, let's just call it even.

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 28 Terrence

Ladies and Gentlemen Terrence

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: I know Jenny Smith from a previous job. She didn't like me at first, but over time I won her over. We've been good friends ever since.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I have played Shortstop and Third Base. Shortstop is probably my favorite.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 28 for your jersey number?

A: 28 is a very lucky number for me. Every child born to my family in the United States, and who survived, was born on the 28th of the Month.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I played basketball for my high school team but I was never very good and sat on the bench most of the time. I actually got a lot better after high school. Go figure.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I can train cats. I've taught my cat to sit on command as well as to pee in the toilet. My friends also rely on me to research the heck out of everything. So if you want to know what the best TV to buy is or who the best retail stock broker is, I can probably tell you.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: No.

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 13 Sandy

We are out of numerical sequence. Oh well. I thought Sandy was shy but I guess something went weird with the e-mail. Anyway...

Ladies and Gentlemen, Sandy

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Because Jenny Smith asked and she is good peeps so I figured any team she'd be putting together would also be with fun and good peeps.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I've played RF, LF, Rover, Catcher, and 2nd. I like playing infield better than outfield because the balls come straight at you and I can catch those better than the ones that come at you from up high. My depth perception sucks so I always stand too short and they go over my head. My favorite would be 2nd but I want to keep playing outfield because I swear I'll catch one of the outfield hits before this season is over!

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 13 for your jersey number?

A: Actually, I originally wanted 28 because that is the last age I remember being. But then I heard somewhere that sports numbers are typically ones that you can hold up on 2 hands. I didn't know if this was true for softball but I chose 13 just to be safe and because some people consider it lucky and I need all the luck I can get.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: Yes, well I've always been to schools that make sports part of the daily class schedule. I think my all-time favorite was trampoline jumping (well, it was supposed to be gymnastics but when I did it, I was pretty much just jumping). I was in track-and-field when I was in junior high at the American School of Kuwait. In high school at Cebu International School (Philippines) I played volleyball, basketball, and swam. I was also in an equestrian school.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I've been doing martial arts since I was 12. I like banging on taiko drums. I pretend I can play the piano (but that backfired on me when I was conned into playing the most retarded version of 'Here Comes the Bride' for an actual wedding procession).

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Only if I can drink it with you.

Monday, July 7, 2008

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 21 Carrie

Ladies and Gentlemen Carrie

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: I'm a future Smith, so not asking me would be a total familial faux pax.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I mostly play second base, but then after that one practice when I showed that I could catch balls in the outfield I played out there a bit. I also play 1st base sometimes when Jenny's missing. I like second because it's not as high-profile as the likes of 3rd and short stop but there is still some action.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 21 for your jersey number?

A: Like everyone else, the 21st is my birthdate. But, as coincidences run in families, my sister AND my grandma were also born on 21sts. The 21st of July is on a Monday, if it was a Sunday we could have all celebrated together by winning the game!

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: So, when I was little my mom tried to get me into everything possible, so I played floor hockey (as the only girl!) and ice skated a little and played softball. I played softball for 7 years but stopped before high school. In high school, I didn't have time for sports. Instead, I was in Marching Band which, in the Midwest, is right up there with Football. Marching band took a lot of stamina, air, and general thinking. I got that "adrenaline rush" that is usually associated with sports competitions, so I consider it a sport.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I am a musician. I play piano, trumpet and trombone. During the "school year" I play with the LA Valley College community band who is ALWAYS taking new members and really isn't amazingly good but sounds good to non-musicians. It's fun to play in a band again. I also am a keen Lego builder, my Lego collection has been building since 1984 and counting.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Hmm, ask number 64.

Saturday, July 5, 2008

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 12 Lillian

Ladies and Gentlemen Lillian

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Sandy wouldn't stop telling me how much fun it was last season, so I just HAD to join in on the fun.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I've played Right field, Left field, and Second base. Don't like Right field, cause you'll be bored/asleep for like 90% of the game and then someone will hit it toward you, and you'll be totally unprepared. I like Second Base the best because you get to be in on the action.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 12 for your jersey number?

A: I just wanted to be right before Sandy who is #13.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: In high school, I was most valuable bench warmer on varsity basketball at North Hollywood High School. I lost my voice a lot cause I spent all the games cheering for my teammates.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I like to think that I can make other people laugh, but I don't know if they're just faking it.

Q: Can I have $50

A: I'll tell you what, I'll give you my debit card. But it's worth -$150 dollars right now, so you'll have to bring it up to +$50. And then you can give it back to me.

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 11 Dave

Ladies and Gentlemen Dave

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: My Brother, player and designated blogger extraordinaire, Rick, is good friends with the Crippler..

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: This season, I played CF, 1B, and threw batting practice for theA-Team. Oddly, I really enjoyed pitching.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 11 for your jersey number?

A: I wore 11 in Little League and being born in November, it seemed to fit. Besides double digit, repeating numbers (i.e. 11, 22, 33,) are powerful good!

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I played Football and ran Track and Cross Country for Crespi. - GoCelts!

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I am mediocre guitarist and have an uncanny ability to spend money.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: On the condition that we drink it together!

Getting to know THE TEAM - 10 Liz

Ladies and Gentlemen, Liz

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Terrence invited me to join.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: Catcher, second base, rover, and right field. I like playing catcher.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 10 for your jersey number?

A: It's my birthday month.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: Tennis for 2.5 years in high school. I played for the Taft High School girls' tennis team.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I can cook some things decently :)

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Of course! (Do you mind if I borrow $100 from you first?)

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 9 Kareena

Ladies and Gentlemen Kareena

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Through Chris :) We met at a Christmas Party 2.5 years ago and started dating happily from then. Now we're engaged! And he was recruiting for the softball team with Jenny. Plus I thought it would be fun to play games and get exercise.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I've played right field and was always right (ha ha) in the first season. This summer season I've played 1st, 2nd, Catcher and Outfield. I like playing the position when I do well. It was awesome playing 1st and being part of a double play with Terrance. Other than that probably catcher because it's low pressure and you get a lot of "action" catching and throwing.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 9 for your jersey number?

A: I was born April 9 and 9 has always been my favorite number :)

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I love playing sports and games in general. My first loves were tag and capture the flag. Played baseball little league and basketball as a kid. Then high school played soccer, touch rugby, ran cross country and played badminton. I went to school at International American schools in Asia so I played for their teams there. Then in college I didn't do as many sports. But I did participate in the Malibu Nautica Triathlon a few years ago, as part of a relay team doing the 1/2 mile swim in the ocean :) I like being active :)

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I think i'm a good writer and I'm artistic, love painting and such. Plus I learn stuff pretty quick. I can beat Chris at Scrabble and word games. And I can move my ears without touching them with my hands :)

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Sure. I'll give you a $50 bill only if you give me a $100 bill. One for one - fair trade :)

The moment it all went to hell! Game 6

I would like to acknowledge Dave's contributions to THE TEAM. If there were a highlight reel of THE TEAM Dave would be on that reel a lot. How many dives through the grass has that dude taken in centerfield? Dave is one of only two players on THE TEAM to hit a homerun. You can make the case that he is the best player we've got. So when I say it went to hell when Chris wasn't at the game and our centerfielder had to pitch, it is a pro-Chris statement not an anti-Dave statement. Now if Dave had killed Meredith with that throw to home then there would have to be some kind of anti-Dave statement.

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 4 Jenny

Ladies and Gentlemen Jenny

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Well, I am the founder...actually, more like a co-founder of the team. One day Chris, Tyler and I were talking about softball. I was already playing on Monday nights and there was no room on that team for any more male players, even though I knew some people who had interest. I had previously played on a softball team (stupidly called the Court Jesters) back in the day with Chris, so the three of us schemed about starting up a team.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I think I've mostly only played 1st base. That's the position I play on my Monday team and I do like it a lot. However, there is a lot of interest in playing first in general, so I have considered putting myself in the outfield to give other people a chance, since I used to play in the outfield when I was in little league.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 4 for your jersey number?

A: In general, I like the number 4. I was also born on the 4th day of September. So maybe that's why I like the number 4.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: No, for whatever reason, I never played on any sports teams in high school (a fact which I regret, honestly). I did play little league from K-8th, I think, and I also played volleyball in middle school (for a parks & rec team). I also have been playing tennis since the 7th grade. In seminary, I played a little flag football, too, which was fun.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I watercolor paint, which I enjoy. (You can see some of my watercolors here). I also enjoy reading. I also play tennis once or twice weekly.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Absolutely! Right after you give me $100. $50 for each of us. I think that's fair.

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 3 Lou

Ladies and Gentlemen Lou

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Chris Kiefer (our pitcher) punched me into submission.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: Third, SS, and left field, I prefer SS, but I've seen to have been in third the most. I like SS, because I can cover more ground that way.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 3 for your jersey number?

A: Absolutely. I chose the number "3" because a) I've had that since I played high school and semi-pro soccer at number 3 and b) as a comedian, the "comedy rule of 3s" applies..."

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I played soccer and track. But my school wouldn't let us play for more than one team at a time in a season... so soccer won out...

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: Standup comedy and the ability to repel women.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Yes. Over an installment plan over 50 years....

Getting to Know THE TEAM - 2 Mimma

Ladies and Gentlemen Mimma

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Lou recruited me when I moved here since he knew I wanted to stay active outdoors in beautiful sunny Cali!

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I've played RF, Rover, 2nd and Catcher. My favorite is catcher because it's the only time I really feel useful!

Q: Is there a special reason you shose 2 for your jersey number?

A: The #2 was my second choice, as you know my first was 42. These are the #'s of my two favorite players on my home team, the NY Yankees, Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter. So since #42 wasn't available I went with #2, Derek Jeter.

Q: Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I was a Track & Field girl in school, with a little basketball. Oh and my other favorite sport, band! I played for the Marlboro Dukes in upstate NY. And I never really played softball until recently really.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: As for other talents, well I'm pretty good at annoying Lou, driving like a maniac, and I can download a mean song!

Q: Can I have $50?

A: I can only afford to give you $5 at this time.

The moment it all went to hell 2! Game 5

We did have some pretty good plays between the shortstops (Terrence and Joey) and the first baseman (Jenny) early on in the game, but I can't remember anything else because as the game wore on, the smell of oreo dookie on a hot bbq just got worse and worse. The second moment it all went to hell was when the direction of the breeze turned. Directly and everywhere into the dugout. I think that was also the point when Rick said "We just need a few more touchdowns and a couple more fieldgoals." Yeah. Whoever planted that smelly stuff next to our dugout had us exactly where they wanted us. I think we'll be okay next week as long as our team can breath.

Q: How did you end up on THE TEAM?

A: Sandy and Lillian - Sandy I used to work with orginally and then became friends and Lillian I met through Sandy.

Q: What positions have you played so far this season? Do you have a favorite?

A: I've played 2nd, catcher, rover but my favorite is Outfield.

Q: Is there a special reason you chose 00 for your jersey number?

A: Well I wanted 007 but 00 is fine.

Q:Did you play sports in school? What teams were you on and what school did you play for?

A: I played Tennis, Swimming and Varsity Softball at Eagle High School.

Q: Besides your outstanding softball ability, what other talents do you have?

A: I'm an abstract painter working on my storefront, I love magic so I have a few tricks up my sleeve and I like to play my acoustic guitar.

Q: Can I have $50?

A: Wow I was going to ask you for $50.00 :-)

The moment it all went to hell! Game 5

Well Tyler jumped on the idea. So this should be short. I did find this game to be an exquisite blend mistakes that flowed out of THE TEAM. However, I am going to leave Jesus out of this. We did score 8 runs so thats something to build on going into next week, but the moment it all went to hell was when we got a whiff of the dugout. It turns out it is impossible to play like winners when it smells like a dog ate Oreos and took a dump on a hot BBQ.

GO THE TEAM!!!

The moment it all went to heck! Game 5

I think we lost 13-5. Maybe it was more than that, the heat may have affected my memory. I don't really think there was one particular moment where it went to hell, as Rick said, it was pretty much a steady decline into hell. I personally think we lost the game before we even took the field because the opposing team had Jesus on their side, and really, what are you supposed to do against that?

The new schedule comes out soon, I'm sure Jenny will email it when she gets it and I'll update the side bar at some point if I'm not feeling too lazy. Stay cool!

Uniforms

If the company that made our uniforms needs a model for their website or brochures or banner ads or live modeling in person in a store, I'd like to volunteer!

The moment it all went to hell! Game 4

It all went to hell in the tie-breaker! It didn't go to Hitler's BBQ in hell. It only went to maybe the Colonel Tom Parker level of hell but a loss is a loss. Seven bases to six bases in the tie-breaker.

Overall it was a strong performance by THE TEAM. There was solid hitting all around with a Home Run by Lou. There were some great plays by Joey (Big Zima) and Lou on some hot line drives and Sandy made a solid play on foul ball.

Despite the pro level graphics by Chris on this very blog, in the first inning I made exactly that baserunning mistake. Sorry.

I have to say this though. It seemed like Variety Pak were a good-natured fun group of people. Maybe it was because I was playing more infield this game so I had the chance to talk to them and tease them but they seemed like a nice bunch. We sure are going to feel bad when we destroy them in the rematch.

GO THE TEAM!!!

The moment it all went to hell! Game 3

It is my understanding that THE TEAM went into extra innings and lost a close one. I do not know when it all went to hell because I was not there. I was at Fenway Park in Boston representing THE TEAM!!!

The moment it all went to hell! Game 2

THE TEAM 13 Amritsar All Stars 6. Sweet Victory! So this this post already becomes a slice of hell for the other guys. I'm going to say it went to hell for The Amritsar All Stars last Wednesday when UPS dropped the jerseys off on my porch. They go like this:

00 Carrie aka CJ aka Care Bear ( I refuse to call her Care Bear )
2 Mimma
3 Lou (In the Winter Season Mitchell & Ness throwback)
4 Jenny
9 Kareena
10 Liz
11 Dave
12 Lillian aka The Enforcer
13 Sandy aka Honey
18 Rick
21 Carrie
28 Terrence
64 Joey aka Big Zima ( I don't think anybody else calls him that but I refuse to call him anything else)
99 Chris aka The Crippler
Roberto aka The guy who doesn't have jersey

We looked like a team and we played like a team. I'm sure we are all looking forward to going undefeated for the rest of the season. Mimma made a good play on a foul ball and Roberto did a good job gunning out a greedy runner trying to turn a single into a double. We could make these plays because we were all well hydrated thanks to Carrie and Joey.... um I mean, Big Zima.

GO THE TEAM!

Baserunning

I saw this happen at our first game, so I made an animated GIF to help out with the explanation. It's not something to harp on, 'cause I've done it myself. It's to help you know when to advance to the next base if you aren't forced to run. This same situation applies when you're on third and looking to score at home.

The moment it all went to hell! Game 1

We were not victorious in our first contest. I wanted to make a regular contribution along the guidelines of picking a moment that the game got away from us. Hopefully there would be contributions that would pinpoint the moment it all went to hell for the other guys but for this week it was THE TEAM that got the extra large serving of hell. As far as choosing a moment goes, it seems it all went to hell when the sun crashed into the earth. It was roasting hot out there! Through the sweat in my eyes I remember Chris, Terrence and Kareena working together to turn a double play and Dave hit a home run. Those were moments it all went to heaven. GO THE TEAM!!!

First Game of Summer!

This Sunday, May 18 @ 4:45pm on Olive #1.

I've been working a little bit on developing some new pitches. If I get consistent enough, I would like to give them some badass nicknames. I realize I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but that's what I do. I mean, I've been planning my late night talk show for the last 3 years.

Top pitch name contenders so far:

The Widowmaker
The Haymaker
The Hoosier Hurler
The Comet
Armageddon
Strawberry Shortcake

I'm open to other suggestions.

Pictures!

A few games ago, my boyfriend Gavin came to his first viewing of THE TEAM!!! in action. Gavin loves his camera like no other, so he brought it along and took some photos, his first foray as sports photographer.

I personally like this picture of a member of THE TEAM!!! hitting the ball because you can see the arc of the ball being it--likely a home run, knowing the caliber of batters on THE TEAM!!!. If you click on the photo or click on this link right here, you will be magically transported to the gallery, where you will see photos like the one to the right. The photo to the right of Chris and Mimma is really cool, but I suppose it indicates how that particular game went: we lost.

Even though we lost the majority of our games this last season, our first, we discovered that we have heart and gumption and wanted to continue this thing on! Hopefully our team photographer will come back and record us in action again!

Scared Hitless

Our first practice game of the season was this past Sunday. We played Scared Hitless. Scared Hitless used to be a team full of Scots (there were two) who had never played softball before, However, something changed this season and they got a couple of bulkier guys that had better hits and more direct throws.

We had about 7 girls playing and a handful of guys so that 3 people sat out each time we took the field. This created an automatic cheering section. We also had a week old baby in the crowd cheering us on.

Despite the huge cheer section, the other team gained on our weaknesses quickly and racked up something insane like 15 runs in the first 5 innings.

But do not be afraid, we came back. About an hour into the game our team started doing great. Hits were made, bases were run, home plates were crossed. Things were looking up.

My favorite part was when I hit a ball to 3rd base and they made a bad throw and I got on first. Chris was the first base coach at the time (have you ever noticed that couch and coach are easy words to mix up?). The first base player was this lady with yellow sleeves. From the get-go, I wasn't fond of yellow-sleeved lady because she was eating those sunflower seeds while on the field and spitting. Ridiculous. This is NOT the major leagues, no tobacco like chewing and spitting needed. Anyway, when I got to first Chris commented, "Your team is falling apart." Yellow-sleeved lady GLARED at us. Chris and I exchanged glances. Maybe this is a had to be there story, but come on, it was funny!

In other news, we ended up losing but we got 10 runs in that last inning. Next time, if we get there maybe a little earlier and warm up for real maybe it won't take an hour to get into our groove.

You'll be happy to hear that Scared Hitless moved up to the next league so we won't be crossing paths with Yellow-sleeves anytime soon. I'm happy they moved up and we didn't because we're in a league that fits our team (unless you new Summer leaguers are particularly awesome players) and allows us to have fun rather than stressed with long innings against too good teams.

First Post.

This is the official blog of THE TEAM!!! More will be written soon. If you'd like to be a contributor, email Tyler. That is all for now.
